Peabody are committed to providing a Women’s Building as part of the new development and have been working with various stakeholders since Autumn 2019 to scope out the brief for this unique element of the new site.
In December 2019, Peabody held an initial public exhibition event on the Women’s Building to provide an opportunity for local interest groups to share their ideas with each other, the Peabody team, and members of the local community.
Groups that presented included: Sisters Uncut; Women in Prison; Reclaim Holloway; Holloway Neighbourhood group & Network of Finsbury Park Women’s Groups; Islington Museum; Penderyn and Trecastle TRA; Nikki Gibbs – local artist and criminal justice campaigner; and MOPAC.
Islington Council attended the event, and Peabody commissioned Sara Hyde (a criminal justice policy expert) to conduct an independent report of the evening.
Feedback from this workshop has informed the emerging plans for the Women’s Building and Islington Council’s draft Design Brief. A follow up feedback session was held in March 2020 to update residents and local community groups on these conversations.
